FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

VANCOUVER GRIFFINS SIGN U.S.A. VETERAN SHELLEY LOONEY.

The Vancouver Griffins are pleased to announce the signing of USA National Women’s Hockey Team forward SHELLEY LOONEY.

The Michigan native and graduate of Northeastern University brings a wealth of experience to the Griffins. Looney played on Team USA in six of the seven World Championships that have been contested in women’s hockey. She scored the game-winning goal in Team USA’s 3-1 gold-medal victory over Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, and was a member of the 2002 silver-medal winners at Salt Lake City.

At 5’5”, 139 lbs (166cm, 63kg), Looney not only survived the tough brand of college hockey played in New England, she thrived, scoring 68 goals and 59 assists in 107 games for the Huskies. Looney’s reputation was cemented when she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year during her senior season in 1993-1994.

Looney joins Team USA captain CAMMI GRANATO in donning the Griffins sweater for the upcoming 2002 National Women’s Hockey League season. Along with Team Canada veteran NANCY DROLET, the Griffins now have three Olympians on the roster.
