FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE VANCOUVER GRIFFINS ANNOUNCE INVITEES Vancouver - Sylvain Leone, Head Coach of the Vancouver Griffins Hockey Club, is pleased to announce the names of the 36 players who have been invited to attend the Griffins' main selection camp in August. The 36 athletes were selected from among the more than 80 women who participated in the Griffins' first ever rookie tryout camp, which took place over the weekend at the 8-rinks Ice Sports Centre in Burnaby. The players invited to the August camp come primarily from across BC. Three international players have also been invited, Julia Berg of Norway, Maren Valenti of Germany, and Hongmei Liu of China. "The skill level in women's hockey just gets better every year, and I was very pleased by the quality of the play this past weekend," said Leone. "We have a very talented group of players coming to our main selection camp in August, and I am confidant that we will be very competitive this year," he continued. Canadian National Women's Hockey Team members Nancy Drolet, Jayna Hefford, Lori Dupuis, and Delaney Collins participated in the events at 8-rinks as guests. An enthusiastic crowd was on hand for Sunday's showcase game, in which Julia Berg of Norway got a goal and an assist in the first period, helping her team win the game four to two. Established in January of this year, the Vancouver Griffins are the newest franchise in the 10-team semi-professional NWHL, the world's premier women's hockey league. The Griffins have applied for membership in the BC Amateur Hockey Association (BCAHA) and for affiliate membership in the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League.
