STEELERS DEFEAT THE OUTBACK

NEW WESTMINSTER - The Richmond Steelers beat the BC Outback 2-1 at Queens Park Arena this evening. The teams were evenly matched for much of the tight-checking game. Karen Alexander got Richmond on the board first, off a pass from Sonya Sneyd. Kamloops tied it up in the second on a goal by Kelsey Hagadt, with Jess Nadon and Any Rudisill picking up the helpers. Richmond got the go-ahead goal mid way through the third from Carmen Milne.

The loss for the Outback eliminates them from the BC Provincial Championships, which are being hosted by the Vancouver Griffins. The Richmond Steelers will face off against the Griffins at 9:15 am, and again at 2:30 pm to determine who will win the Championship and the right to represent BC at the Esso Women's National Championships in March.

Established in January 2000, the Vancouver Griffins are the newest franchise in the 10-team NWHL, the world's premier women's hockey league. The Griffins compete in the SCFAHL and are playing an exhibition schedule in the NWHL this season. They will begin full interlocking play in the NWHL in 2001-2002. According to CHA statistics, participation in female hockey has grown by more than 400% in the last 10 years, making it among the fastest growing sports in the world.
