DROLET SHINES IN WIN OVER ROCKETS

New Westminster - Nancy Drolet earned seven points Thursday night, leading the Griffins to a convincing 10-1 win against the Coquitlam Rockets in SCFAHL play at Queens Park Arena. The Rockets kept it close until the middle of the second period, when Drolet began her scoring streak with a shorthanded goal. By the end of the game she had scored four goals and three helpers. Her linemate Julia Berg earned a hat trick, scoring all three goals in the third period. The Griffins' defensive core also had a strong night, contributing a total of six assists between Tamara Pickford, Kira Sinow, and Patti Maskall. Jennifer Price got her first start in net for the Griffins since returning from a head injury sustained in Saskatchewan in November.

Goaltenders Terri Breker and Kendall Trout shared the job in goal for the Rockets, facing a total of 42 shots, 19 in the second period alone. Michelle Morgan scored the lone marker in the first for the Rockets. Despite their loss last night, the Rockets remain the only team in the SCFAHL to defeat the Griffins this season. The win puts the Griffins overall record to 13-4-0, and SCFAHL record at 6-1-0.

Established in January of this year, the Vancouver Griffins are the newest franchise in the 10-team NWHL, the world's premier women's hockey league. The Griffins compete in the SCFAHL and are playing an exhibition schedule in the NWHL this season. They will begin full interlocking play in the NWHL in 2001-2002. According to CHA statistics, participation in female hockey has grown by more than 400% in the last 10 years, making it among the fastest growing sports in the world.
